Text-based tattoos featuring custom lettering, calligraphy, quotes, and typographic designs.
REAP lists 9 Script/Lettering artists within 100 km of Sydney, out of 37 across Australia. Most of them work out of 5/18 Whistler St, Art On Skin, Black Jade Tattoo and Evermore Ink. Between them there are 27 pieces on show, all posted by the artists themselves.
Start with the portfolios above. Look for a body of Script/Lettering work rather than one or two pieces, and check healed photos as well as fresh ones, because Script/Lettering ages differently depending on line weight and how much solid black or colour is in it. If an artist lists Script/Lettering as a specialty they are usually the safer bet for a large piece. Message two or three before you commit. Most Sydney artists will tell you honestly if your idea sits outside what they do well.
Small Script/Lettering pieces usually land in one sitting of one to three hours. Anything with heavy detail, large areas of colour, or work that wraps around a limb runs to multiple sessions spaced a few weeks apart so the skin can settle. Your artist will give you a real estimate once they have seen the design and the placement, and it is normal for that estimate to change after the stencil goes on.
Both, and most do both. Flash is pre-drawn work the artist already wants to tattoo, so it books faster and needs less back and forth. Custom means they draw to your brief, which takes longer and usually needs a deposit before any drawing starts. If you are unsure, send a rough brief and a few references and ask which route suits it. Plenty of Script/Lettering artists post their available flash straight on their profile.
Yes. Guest spots are common, and they are how a lot of people get tattooed by artists who normally work in another state or overseas. Visiting artists usually announce dates a few weeks ahead and fill up fast, so following the studios you like is the practical way to catch them. A guest spot is also worth considering if the Script/Lettering artist you want in Sydney has a long waiting list.
